Born in New York City in 1907, Ullman grew up to become known for his variety of pursuits. As an author he penned numerous books, including
Banner in the Sky, a 1955 Newbery Honor Book, and most of his works were adapted into major motion pictures. Ullman also worked as a newspaper reporter, traveled the world, and climbed mountains. In fact, he was part of the first American expedition to Mount Everest. Ullman later passed away in 1971 at age 63.
