Herriot's Treasury for Children

James Herriot was a famous vet who wrote lots of stories. I love his stories and they are very fun even if they are real! I think he likes cats the most because most of his books are about cats.
I like just one woof best because there is a dog who has just one woof!

Most of these stories are about dogs and cats! One is about sheep and I want to tell about that one! Harry's father went out to the barn with Harry (who got up early to see the lambs). His father gave both lambs to him! He named one Smudge because it had a black smudge on his face! The lamb's sister was named Smartie! Harry's father told him that some lambs think about running away to get to their own world. Smudge was one of these kinds of lambs, but Harry did not know it! Smudge finally found a way out of the fence after looking for days! He slipped out, and found his own world! He found cows and an old castle ruined by a battlement. He went on, but he started to get hungry. He wanted to find his way back to his mother, but he could not find a passage back in! It has a joyful ending, but Smudge has lots of trials first. You should read it to find out how he gets back in. You would like reading all of these stories! Some are sad, but they all have joyful endings. The pictures in this book are really, really beautiful!!!

A really good book for children and adults. I like it because it has animals. There are really good painted illustrations. My favorite story is Moses the Kitten, about a kitten he found in the bull rushes and when he came back a little while later the kitten was with the baby pigs in the pigpen. Another good story is Blossom comes home about a cow that didn't produce enough milk. When they tried to sell her she came back home. I also like Oscar the Cat About Town. I enjoy it because he was called Oscar and Tiger, and he's called Cat About Town because he was missing once and they found him at the most social place he could find.

These enjoyable stories take place in England and are about a kind veterinarian who helps loveable farm animals. Some stories are sad, yet all eight tales work out in the end.

This delightful collection of stories by the well-known English vetinarian James Herriot will entertain old and young alike. Even the youngest child in the family will love this book, as it has fabulous illustrations on every page! Ruth Brown and Peter Barrett have illustrated the stories with beautiful soft watercolor art work. The accuracy and detail in the drawings is amazing. All this, as well as that it's a sturdy hardback book, built to last, will make this the perfect addition to every home library. It's a book that will be treasured for years to come.
Of course, it is sure to be a hit with animal lovers, but all children will love the stories. Each story is set in the countryside setting of Herriot's beloved Yorkshire Dales. Those familiar with the series will recognise some of their favorites amongst those in this selection. Herriot writes with a warm style that children will understand and be instantly drawn to. He writes of familiar and homely things, emotions common to all, and of course, our delight and love of Gods' creatures.
This book is used in some homeschool curriculum, such as Sonlight. It would make an excellent read-aloud to add to any Unit study on England, Animals, or the Vetinarian.
I highly recommend this book, wholeheartedly ;-)
