Pilgrim's Progress in Modern English

Publisher: Bridge-Logos
Trade Paperback, 450 pages
Price: $19.99

John Bunyan's immortal classic distinctively revised for the 21st century reader by F. Edward Hazelbaker.

The Pilgrim's Progress has been called "the greatest allegory ever written." Its appeal sweeps across the scopes of age, intellect and education. Children read it for the excitement of the story; eager believers are challenged and trained by its invaluable teaching; Bible students and scholars alike read it for its depth of doctrine.

Just as relevant today as it was when John Bunyan wrote it from his cell in prison, The Pilgrim's Progress is the story of every Christian—from the first stirrings of the Holy Spirit beckoning us to follow Christ to our final arrival in the Celestial City of God.

This new complete edition, written in plain, modern English is an enriching complement to any Christian's personal library. The Pilgrim's Progress in Modern English will be enjoyed by the young and old, the educated and uneducated for years to come.

This adaption contains detailed indexes, author biographies, illustrations, a thorough study guide, and a link to an audio excerpts download. Hazelbaker manages to keep Bunyan's elegant 17th century tone, but avoides mere superfluity. One thing to appreciate about his rendering is the elimination of the dialogue format found in the original. Instead of chunks of text clearly labeled with the speaker's name, Hazelbaker opts for a more modern novel format. Bible references (including additions by Hazelbaker) are found in the notes after each chapter.
