Daddy is off to war, and the rest of the Mitchell family are left to hold the fort in their Washington, D. C. home. One of Daddy's last admonitions is to his oldest daughter Joan—"No Dogs!" Joan, who would dearly love to have such a pet, puts her energies instead into forming a club to help at home. However, as one unexpected pet after another joins the "Mitchell Zoo," Joan wonders what her father will have to say about it all.
Warm new friendships and a few awkward situations result from the children's zeal to help out their mother on the homefront. Amid the busy whirlwind of this lively family there are also moments of sadness, of fear and of unlooked-for joy. No life can be quite normal during times of war.
