Frequently Asked Questions:
- How does sing, Spell, Read & Write (SSR&W) work?
SSR&W utilizes Phonics Songs, Games, Phonetic Storybook Readers, Consumable Texts, and Assessments in a systematic and sequential order that leads to independent reading.
- Is this a total Language Arts Curriculum or just a supplement?
SSR&W is a total Language Arts curriculum that not only teaches how to read, but also teaches Comprehension, Spelling, Handwriting, Grammar, and Creative Writing.
- For what grade is Level 1 Sing, Spell, Read & Write designed?
The Level 1 SSR&W program is designed to teach children in Grade 1 how to read, write, and spell independently. In Grades 2 and 3, it will remediate students who need to be brought up to grade level in reading, writing, and spelling.
- Do the 36 steps take 36 weeks to complete?
No. The 36 steps are sequential lessons to teach your student to read, write, and spell. Time needed to cover each step will vary. The entire program is paced for the equivalent of one school year, however, your child will be reading in 2 to 3 months.
- I am not homeschooling. Will this program help my child who is struggling with reading?
Yes. Use this program 30 minutes a day with your child.
- Will the SSR&W songs "teach" my child to read?
The Phonics Songs are only a part of the total program to teach your student. You will work directly with your student on each lesson following the step-by-step manual.
- How do the Phonetic Storybook Readers help my child learn to read?
The decodable Phonetic Storybook Readers which are connected to the Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling lessons, have 1,000 pages of colorfully illustrated stories, poems, and rhyming tales to ensure success and instill a lifelong love of reading.
- What games are featured in the program?
The 5 games are "Go Fish" and "Bingo" type games to reinforce letter sounds as well as high-frequency sight words, in a motivational way.
- Is it possible to use this kit with my other children?
Yes. The Level 1 SSR&W kit can be used with other children by providing additional consumable texts for each child.
- What program should be used for teaching an older student?
The WINNING program, also by Sue Dickson, is designed for the remediation of students in Grades 4 and above who need help in learning to read.
