Albert

Every morning, Albert sticks his hand out the window to test the weather. Some days it is too cold. Others, it is too noisy. Whenever he sticks his hand out, it is always too something, so Albert always ends up staying inside. But one day, when he sticks his hand out as usual to test the weather, a cardinal flies by. To his surprise, the cardinal drops a stick in Albert’s outstretched hand. While Albert stares dumbfounded, the cardinal proceeds to build an entire nest on Albert’s palm, and finishes by laying a bright blue egg in the nest.

“Um, I hate to disappoint you, but I’m not sure this is going to work.” Albert informs the mother cardinal.

But the cardinals don’t seem to listen to Albert, so Albert has no choice but to stand at his window with his hand hanging out. And as Albert discovers, this new life has charms that a life sitting around inside could never have. Standing there at the window, Albert has plenty of time to listen to the happy noise of talking people, feel the warmth of the sun, and experience the joy of watching the eggs hatching. When the birds are all hatched and flown away, Albert once again sticks his hand out the window.

“Just right” He says, and goes outside for a walk.
